Getting Started
There are any number of reasons people seek help. Depression and anxiety or other troubling symptoms are common reasons. Sometimes people come with difficulty in relationships or work. Some look for help when negotiating a big life transition, experiencing a loss, or grappling with a history of abuse or neglect. Sometimes people just need extra support in getting through a rough spot in life.
Starting the process of psychotherapy can seem somewhat mysterious – you may find yourself wondering if it will help you, how it will work and what will be involved. I believe it takes a lot of fortitude to make that first call to a therapist and admire the courage it takes each time a client embarks on this process of self-knowledge. I strive to explain things and make as much as possible transparent from the beginning. I encourage you to ask questions and give feedback about how things feel along the way.
I usually recommend a short consultation period of 1-3 sessions while we see if it makes sense to work together. I will ask questions and get some history from you. After I have had the chance to hear what brings you to therapy we can discuss the frequency and length of treatment. If we are in agreement, then we will set up a regular schedule of meetings.
